G4LD engine

The G4LD engine is a 1.4-liter displacement engine widely used by Hyundai and Kia in compact models. The following is a detailed introduction from its technical characteristics, performance, advantages and disadvantages, and application models:

Technical Characteristics

  • Fuel Injection System
It adopts direct fuel injection technology, which can more accurately control the fuel injection volume and timing, allowing fuel to fully mix with air in the cylinder, improving combustion efficiency, and thus enhancing the engine's power output and fuel economy.
  • Valve Train
Equipped with a DOHC (Double Overhead Camshaft) valve train, it can separately control the opening and closing of intake and exhaust valves, making the intake and exhaust processes smoother, improving the engine's charging efficiency, and facilitating power output at high speeds.
  • Materials
Both the cylinder head and cylinder block are made of aluminum alloy, which ensures structural strength while effectively reducing the engine's weight. This helps lower the vehicle's overall fuel consumption and improve handling performance. Additionally, aluminum alloy has good heat dissipation performance, which can enhance the engine's operational stability.
  • Cooling and Exhaust Technologies
It uses a separated cooling technology for the cylinder block and head, with water temperature sensors set on both to maintain different temperatures for their cooling circulating water. This allows the cylinder block's cooling water to be at a higher temperature, reducing friction and achieving fuel savings. The integrated exhaust cylinder head design integrates the exhaust manifold into the cylinder head, where cooling circulating water can lower exhaust temperatures, improve high-speed fuel economy, and contribute to the lightweight and downsizing of the engine assembly.
  • Other Technologies
The OCV valve is integrated inside the phase difference rotor, resulting in less air pressure loss and faster response time, which reduces fuel consumption. The first and third piston rings are coated with Si-DLC on top of the original CrN coating to reduce friction and fuel consumption. It also uses high-efficiency energy spark plugs/iridium spark plugs, making the ignition process more stable and extending the service life of the entire system.

Performance

  • Power Output
The maximum power reaches 103KW, with a maximum horsepower of 140PS and a maximum torque of 242N·m. The maximum torque is available in the speed range of 1500-3200rpm, providing abundant power for the vehicle. It allows for easy acceleration and overtaking in urban driving.
  • Fuel Economy
Benefiting from advanced technologies, the engine performs excellently in fuel economy. The official comprehensive fuel consumption is approximately 6L/100km, and in actual use, it can maintain a good fuel consumption level under reasonable driving conditions.

Advantages and Disadvantages

  • Advantages
    • Good power performance, with strong competitiveness among 1.4L displacement engines in the same class.
    • Excellent fuel economy, helping owners save fuel costs.
    • The aluminum alloy cylinder head and block make the engine lightweight, contributing to improved vehicle handling and fuel economy.
    • Complies with China V emission standards, demonstrating good environmental performance.
  • Disadvantages
A few owners have reported oil burning issues, which may be related to minor faults in the turbo engine, though this is not a common phenomenon.

Application Models

It is mainly applied to compact cars and SUVs under the Hyundai and Kia brands, such as Beijing Hyundai Elantra N Line (Feista), ix35, Kia Sportage (Zhipao), KX3 傲跑 (Ace), etc.
